We start by uploading the image. The image we used for the print can be found here. You are able to upload multiple images, but for this print, we only use one. This tab is very useful for adjusting the brightness and contrast settings. This may significantly improve the results of your lithophane. Although not strictly necessary, it can greatly enhance your lithophane! When we are happy about our image we can start creating our model. With ItsLitho you can create a sphere lithophane in just one click, by clicking on the sphere in the shape select box!
We would like to finetune the sphere by adding a frame on the bottom. This will ensure the bottom of the lithophane is flat, making it easier to print. ItsLitho will give you a warning in the quality options when the file is too large.
This warning is based on the maximum file size of what the slicer can handle. Therefore we increase the mm per pixel. This will lower the filesize. You can increase it up to 0. The only thing left to do is to download your Valentine lithophane!
Press the download button in the lower right corner of the lithophane preview screen. Your high-quality lithophane is now being generated which might take two to five seconds. After this your download is ready! The next step is to slice your lithophane and print it. Supports are optional but it is possible to print the sphere lithophane without supports! Lithophane Sphere Maker Turn your picture into a spherical lithophane stl with the options below. Design spherical lithophanes with this tool. There are many options for your lithophane. I will go through the lithophane settings from top to bottom. You can make a moon lithophane with the moon in the "background" everywhere that your picture is not by putting a check mark next to Moon Background.
You can flip your picture upside down so that you can hang it on the cylindrical base instead of sitting on the base by putting a check mark next to Flip Image. The Crop Image option allows you to crop you image and get any aspect ratio picture that you want.
The Lithophane Resolution is the same as in the other lithophanes. It is the distance between unique heights on the lithophane at the "equator" because the distance actually stretches as you move up and down the sphere. The Sphere Diameter is the diameter of the inside of your sphere. The Picture Angular Height is the angle that your picture takes up. The Picture Angular Width is the angle that your picture wraps around the sphere horizontally.
The maximum is also degrees, but you can control this dimension only if you allow the picture to be cropped by putting a checkmark next to Crop Image. The Maximum Thickness and the Minimum Thickness are both the same as in other tools - they determine how thick the lithophane is across the entire picture.
The Cylinder Outer Diameter sets the outer diameter of the cylinder that is below the spherical lithophane. As this value increases, the cylinder must move up the lithophane so that it still intersects the outer surface of the sphere. To get rid of the cylinder, set the Cylinder Outer Diameter to 0.This affects the brightness of the picture you're currently editing. This is the inner diameter of the sphere. The maximum outer diameter of the sphere would be this plus 2 times the maximum thickness.

I've had a lot of experience trying to print photos and I haven't always been successful. It is not a very difficult task to accomplish but it's not a trivial task either, as there are many different ways of accomplishing it.
Once you do it right though, the results are phenomenal!
I've compiled my experiences here so you don't have to go through the learning curve yourself. Not all photos will look good when 3D printed, so you must think of the following things when choosing the right picture :. Note that those are just things to keep in mind and will greatly be affected by the print quality of your printer and size of your lithophane. If you have a well calibrated printer, you can probably print any kind of picture. For this instructable, I have chosen three pictures as a demonstration.
The first one is a picture of myself when I was a baby, I think it's a great image because of the contrast of colors in it. The other two pictures are from my Windows "Sample Pictures" directory, a Koala and a Lighthouse which will serve to show how a badly chosen picture might turn up. These would be a good test to show how a bad image would appear since all the varying grey in the Koala's fur will cause a lot of spikes in the STL and the print will look bad due to all those small details which most FDM printers will have trouble with due to oozing, retractions, extrusion width, etc.
As for the Lighthouse, it has a lot of dark rocks that may be very hard to print and there's not a lot of contract between the lighthouse and the sky. As you can see, there are a few options available to you.
The easiest one of course is to use Cura since you may already be used to it. Since version A dialog will pop up asking you to select the size see picture.
You will want to keep the " Darker is Higher " option and you may want to enable the " Light Smoothing " option, or not, depending on your preference.
